Special Needs Master Bath

"With all the recent hype about the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness of ALS - commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease - we bring to you a recently completed project that we were tasked with designing for a client's mother who has been stricken with this debilitating disease. The existing master bath was extremely close quarters and in major need of a remodel. Couple that with the task of designing a functional and aesthetically pleasing master bath for handicap needs and the challenge begins. We met with our client, heard the needs for his mother's care and prepared the design to accommodate the evolving changes of this progressive disease. We gutted the space completely and eliminated the tub to allow for a large walk in/roll in shower. Given the fact that a wheelchair is inevitable as the stages of this disease become more aggressive, we designed this space with a barrier free, open shower concept with a linear drain to address the need for free drainage of the shower enclosure. We widened the open pass through from the walk through closets and the master bedroom which required some structural modifications to the headers for load bearing purposes. With our client's mother's needs requiring an in-home assistant, we designed the shower to allow for the assistant to help mom with her hygiene needs without getting a literal bath themselves. So, we integrated personal body sprayers that allowed the client to stay seated in a chair; if need be, and still wash from the seated position. To further assist in this endeavor, we incorporated a slide arm bar with a removable shower head that could be used by either Mom or her care assistant. All in all this space turned out ""better than we expected"" per the client and Mom says, ""It's absolutely beautiful, I love it""."
